Family Days provide an opportunity for the whole family to enjoy a day out, amongst other people who understand the additional difficulties faced, and can provide emotional as well as practical assistance.
A key element of these days is that it provides an additional social opportunity for the special needs children to get together outside of school. Often the opportunities for them to mix with their friends can be very limited, and days out like these are important for the special need child's social development. These days out also give the siblings an opportunity to meet, get to know each other and for them to realise that they are not unique in having a special needs brother or sister.
Our programme is varied, some days are just organising one or more bowling lanes, or meeting up at a local park for a picnic, and others are more formal, for example we go to the pantomime at The Hawth every year and usually one or two other theatre trips during the year.
We often provide transport for our days out, whether coach or minibus, which gives families the opportunity to chat and enjoy the day in a more relaxed environment. Families benefit from reduced transport costs and discounted entrance tickets to a wide variety of venues. Most of all these days are about having fun and enjoying time together as a family.
